A truly superb old vine Barbera from one the masters. This select wine is made from a tiny vineyard of little over an hectare, where they get extremely low yeilds of below 4 ton/hectare due to strict fruit selection and a high vine age of 90+ years. Bottled unfiltered after 18 months in large oak, the Scaronne VV is one of the true highlights of Piedmont wine. Allocations are small -- collect!

Its Origins

They made wine here back in the 1800s, but it was not until 1919 that Mario Vietti turned the family farm to viticulture and Vietti labels first appeared on the Italian market. The winery grew through the 1950’s, when new export markets opened and Mario’s daughter and son in law Alfredo Currado pioneered what was later to become a defining regional idea - single vineyard Barolo and Barbaresco. Today Vietti remain a towering name, with a portfolio occupying the top tier in most Piedmontese categories - particularly their profoundly important expressions of Cru Barolo. But history will also remember Vietti and Alfredo Currado for something quite different: the survival of the Arneis variety. It was Currado who almost single-handedly revived this hitherto ignored and abused grape and, appreciating its inherent qualities, not only persuaded others but led from the front to create the first, the most beautiful and still the most classic examples of what is now enshrined as the Roero Arneis DOCG.

What The Critics Say

93/100 Parker's Wine Advocate, Monica Larner

"The 2015 Barbera d'Alba Vigna Vecchia Scarrone is a beautifully crafted and accessible wine made with fruit from a historic vineyard. Luca Currado opted not to make Barbera in the difficult 2014 vintage. This wine opens to immediate density and richness. It shows succulent aromas of blackberry, spice, tar and dark plum that build the wine's soaring aromatic profile. Earthy tones of forest floor and black truffle also appear. The mouthfeel is on the soft side (of the Barbera spectrum) and there is a playful point of sweetness as well." Drink 2017 - 2022

Winemaker notes on current 2015 vintage

"Ruby-red colour and full-bodied wine. Floral and fruity aroma of concentrated berries and tar with hints of blackberry. Refreshing acidity, rich and soft tannins, finesse, excellent balance, great complexity, integration and a long lingering finish. Food Pairings: hearty stews, seasoned pasta and poultry with rich sauces, game, roasted red meats and sharp cheeses."
