A beautifully bright and expressive example of this cool Spanish red grape. Originally from this northern area it was mainly a blending partner in Rioja, but has recently emerged in its own right for charming qualities of bright, intensely flavoured fruit with lovely floral, spicy aromatics. In a style that plays into the virtues of this modern producer and moderate, slower-ripening region, this superb Graciano is a nice side step for Tempranillo lovers and just a great-value Spanish red.

Its Origins

Brothers Xabier, Iñaki and Mikel Sanz started this project with a 2007 Graciano but they almost immediately focused on recovering old Garnacha vineyards in the vicinity of Fitero in southern Navarra. Viña Zorzal currently owns and grows 40 hectares, 25 of which are traditional Garnacha bush vines; the remaining land is planted with Graciano and Tempranillo, some Garnacha Blanca and Chardonnay. Wines are made at the family winery in Corella which has been renamed Viña Zorzal. Garnacha-expert and winemaker Jorge Navascués consults for them. The landscape in this subarea of DO Navarra known as Ribera Baja — encompassing the first foothills of the Sistema Ibérico mountain range— differs widely from the distinctive Ebro Valley flatlands, thus the wines show excellent freshness and vibrancy.

What The Critics Say

89+/100 Parker's Wine Advocate, Luis Gutierrez

"The floral and perfumed 2015 Graciano felt quite expressive and clean, from a year when the grape seems to have ripened to perfection, with moderate alcohol and very good freshness. This is an impressive Graciano matured in 225- and 500-liter French oak barrels for nine months. 32,000 bottles produced. It was bottled in February 2017. -- I noticed a nice progression in the wines from Viña Zorzal (do not confuse it with the project from the Michelini brothers in Mendoza, Argentina). They are advised by Jorge Navascues from Cariñena. They work mostly with vineyards in the higher altitude village of Fitero, some of them amazingly old. They are clearly on the way up, with better wines each vintage, irrespective of the character of the year. There is a big change in 2015, but what I tasted from barrel and tank from 2016 was even better. The best is yet to come. Clearly one of the names to watch in Navarra." 2017 - 2019

Vinous, Josh Raynolds (2014 vintage)

"Vivid ruby-red. Spice-accented aromas of fresh dark berries and cherry. Juicy and focused in the mouth, offering sappy black raspberry and bitter cherry flavors that flesh out on the back half. Finishes with building sweetness, gently tannins and persistent berry character."

17.5/20 JancisRobinson.com (2011 vintage)

"This was one of the best wines in the tasting, both refreshing and very well filled with sour black fruit, black cherries, thyme and black pepper. Very good balance, light tannins and very well-defined texture. I am a particular fan of the delicate, silky texture it has. (FC)."
