A very serious drop, the Shotfire Shiraz is consistently rated 'outstanding value for money' by James Halliday. 5 Stars Raymond Chan and 94/100 Wine Orbit Magazine. With dark fruit depth but also huge complexity and a very present structure of acid and tannin, this wine is drinking now but is extremely built to last for this paltry price.

Its Origins

Thorn-Clarke has a strong belief in the age old saying “you can’t make good wine from bad grapes”. In the late 1980’s governments were sponsoring growers to pull vines in an attempt to overcome an oversupply in the industry. Against trend, David Clarke, a geologist by training, set about testing soils and buying land (at one time under car headlights to avoid local farmer suspicion) with the intention of establishing his own vineyards in the Barossa. Developing a great understanding for the diversity of the Barossa, David purchased land in two sections of the Eden Valley and two in the Barossa Valley. The Eden Valley has since become synonymous with high quality white wines and the Barossa with high quality reds. The name Thorn-Clarke derives from the relationship between two long time Barossa families. The winery owners are David and Cheryl Clarke (nee Thorn) and their son Sam is manager of the winery. Cheryl’s brother, David Thorn manages the Mount Crawford and Kabininge vineyards for Thorn-Clarke Wines.

What The Critics Say

5 Stars Raymond Chan

"Very dark, deep, near impenetrable black-hued ruby-red colour, a little lighter on the rim. The bouquet is full and voluminous with rich, ripe, up-front, near opulent aromas of blackberries melded with liquorice and subtle layers of savoury eucalyptus and cedar, and oak vanilla notes. The aromatics are harmonious and integrated. Full-bodied, the palate features rich and plush fruit flavours of ripe blackberries and liquorice entwined with dark plums, cedar and oak vanilla. The fruit is vibrant and lively, and supported by fine-grained tannin extraction, providing mouthfilling body, depth and grip. Lacy, background acidity lends energy and the wine carries with underlying power to a long and sustained finish of liquorice and cedar. This is a rich and lusciously sweet, ripe Shiraz with blackberry and plum fruit melded with cedary oak on a well-structured palate with a vibrant mouthfeel. Match with roast lamb and slow-cooked game meats over the next 6-8 years. Shiraz fruit from the ‘St Kitts’, ‘Milton Park’ and ‘Kabininge’ vineyards, fermented to 14.5% alc., the wine aged 14 months in 40% new American oak. 18.5-/20 Feb 2017 RRP $27.00"

94/100 Wine Orbit, Sam Kim

This consistently excellent label delivers awesome fruit concentration and richness together with seductive complexity, exhibiting dark fruit, smoked game, toasted almond, dark chocolate and cherry pie notes. The palate is impressively weighted and flavoursome, and offers outstanding fruit purity combined with stylish oak undertones. At its best: now to 2025. $27.00.
