The first winery to be established in the Gimblett Gravels Wine growing District, Stonecroft is a small boutique winery owned by Dermot McCollum and Andria Monin, who bought the property in 2010 and live on the Roy’s Hill Vineyard with their two children. Stonecroft is well known for its Syrah, Zinfandel, Gewürztraminer and Chardonnay wines, and has the claim for the oldest Syrah vines in the country! Only organic practices are used and both the two original vineyards and the winery are fully certified organic with AsureQuality. The third vineyard is in conversion to organic status. Total production is small, with only 2,000 to 2,500 cases produced annually.
What The Critics Say
5 Stars Michael Cooper
"The Gewürztraminers from this tiny Hawke's Bay winery are among the finest in the country. This 'Old Vine' wine is made entirely from grapes hand-picked from the original Mere Road plantings of 1983. Certified organic, the 2015 vintage (5*) is a pale gold, mouthfilling (14.5 per cent alcohol), very rich wine, with lush, ripe, peachy, spicy flavours, gentle acidity, and a smooth, gently sweet (20 grams/litre of residual sugar), lasting finish. Drink now or cellar." Drink 2018 - 2024
96/100 Wine Orbit, Sam Kim (2014 vintage)
"This is a formidable wine showing opulent aromas of mango, lychee, sweet nectarine and potpourri, which lead to a concentrated and powerful palate that delivers gloriously rich texture and expansive mouthfeel, beautifully supported by subtle sweetness and seamless acidity. A glorious rendition. At its best: now to 2024. $47.00. Moderate availability. Certified organic. www.stonecroft.co.nz. Feb 2015."
