The vineyard is nestled under Mount Tapuae-O-Uenuku (Maori" "Footprint of the Rainbow"). At the top of the Southern Alps, it strongly influences the climate, with its rain shadow bestowing low rainfall and low humidity upon the Awatere Valley. Along with sunny days and cool nights this creates perfect conditions for slow steady ripening and flavour development. Awatere grapes have a distinctive fruity yet steely and herbaceous flavour quite different to those produced elsewhere in Marlborough.
What The Critics Say
18+/20 Raymond Chan
"Bright straw-yellow colour with lemon-green hues, lighter on edge. This has a well-proportioned nose with deep and concentrated aromas of white stonefruits and exotic white and yellow florals, unfolding layers of tropical fruits, lemon-curd and nutty oak elements with aeration. Dry to taste and medium-bodied, the palate features deep and concentrated flavours of white and yellow stonefruits, florals, minerals, and spicy, nutty oak that form a strong and positive core with subtle richness. The mouthfeel possesses bright, cutting and zesty acidity and very fine textures that provide drive and linearity, and the wine carries to a lingering finish of exotic florals and spicy oak nuances. This is a concentrated Albarino with exotic fruit complexed by spicy oak, and a fresh, linear palate. Match with roasted and barbecued seafood and poultry, and with Chinese cuisine over the next 3+ years. Estate fruit, 60% stainless-steel fermented, and 40% indigenous yeast fermented and aged 6 months in seasoned barriques with 40% MLF, to 13.1% alc. and 2.2 g/L RS."
