Merlot and Cabernet Sauvignon

Its Origins

Squawking Magpie Owner and Director Gavin Yortt planted the main Woodland’s vineyard in 1995, with further holdings in 2002 extending the focus on Hawkes Bay classic grapes such as Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot and Syrah. They are members of Sustainable Winegrowing New Zealand and maintain a strong focus on cellaring wines and a quality-driven (rather than brand-driven) market strategy, which begins with rigorous vineyard management. Though not shouting from every shelf, on quality-for-value Squawking Magpie wines are often among the best Hawkes Bay has to offer.

Winemaker notes on current 2015 vintage

"This Wine is deep in colour with a layered fragrant nose of ripe plum and cassis with lifted vanilla, cedar and tobacco notes. The palate has a rich velvet texture with excellent structure, ripe black fruits and cassis flavours with a long full finish. Great cellaring wine for up to 5 years"

"Very full, dark, deep, purple-black red colour. The bouquet is a little restrained and elegant with harmoniously entwined aromas of blackcurrants, spicy black plums, and lifted oak along with underlying fresh herbal nuances. Medium-full bodied, the flavours of dark berries and blackcurrants, mint and fresh herbs are tightly bound, showing moderate depth and density. The mouthfeel is soft, with drying grainy tannins that prevail on palate, driving the line to a softly fragrant finish with some length. Serve with roasted red meats over the next 4-5 years. 91.6% Merlot and 8.4% Malbec from the company’s vineyard in the Gimblett Gravels, fermented to 13.25% alc., the wine aged 12 months in 1 and 2 y.o.
