Spinifex is one of the undercover jewels of the Barossa Valley. New Zealand husband and wife team Peter Schell & Magali Gely have extensive experience in southern France, which proves the inspiration for their unique wines made from predominantly Rhone varietals. Spinifex was on the front line of the new wave of Barossa producers. Peter’s wines brought a new sensibility to the region, they were lower in alcohol, concentrated but elegant, and balanced to perfection. He takes the art of blending into the realm of the virtuoso. There are few wineries who deliver refinement and poise from the Barossa Valley like Spinifex. The focus at Spinifex is the red varieties that dominate in the south of France: mataro (more correctly mourvedre), grenache, shiraz and cinsaut. The wines are made in open fermenters, basket-pressed, with partial wild (indigenous) fermentation and relatively long post-ferment maceration.

"In the past the wine has come from higher Barossa vineyards (and Eden Valley) with a ‘couple of buckets of white grapes tossed in’ (and indeed, there is a 1% addition of roussanne in this 2015 wine). It’s often felt like this is a little more old school Barossa shiraz, from Spinifex, but of course the veil of the lighter, defter touch from Pete Schell et al is still here. Gorgeous wine from 2015. Purrs through the palate. Indeed, a kitten’s tongue lick of tannin is the motif through the palate, as is dark berry fruit, a touch of fennel-bay leaf and a comely wrap of espresso character. Lovely perfume of cuddly, black currant, dark plum, liquorice and cola with the faintest of clovey oak. All up, just delicious. But there’s also a finesse in its deep, long expression of Barossa shiraz."
