A rich and savoury Grenache blend from the Barossa. Spinifex are boutique players in Barossa, a couple originally from New Zealand and France who are influenced by the spirit of Southern French wine. The Esprit includes a small amount of Cinsault as a spin on the Rhone GSM, Grenache leading with softness and flow while Mataro and Cinsualt back up structure, density and freshness. A superbly layered and savoury style, the Esprit is 'new wave' Barossa at its best.

Its Origins

Spinifex is one of the undercover jewels of the Barossa Valley. New Zealand husband and wife team Peter Schell & Magali Gely have extensive experience in southern France, which proves the inspiration for their unique wines made from predominantly Rhone varietals. Spinifex was on the front line of the new wave of Barossa producers. Peter’s wines brought a new sensibility to the region, they were lower in alcohol, concentrated but elegant, and balanced to perfection. He takes the art of blending into the realm of the virtuoso. There are few wineries who deliver refinement and poise from the Barossa Valley like Spinifex. The focus at Spinifex is the red varieties that dominate in the south of France: mataro (more correctly mourvedre), grenache, shiraz and cinsaut. The wines are made in open fermenters, basket-pressed, with partial wild (indigenous) fermentation and relatively long post-ferment maceration.

What The Critics Say

96/100 Halliday's Australian Wine Companion, James Halliday (2013 vintage)

"63/21/16% grenache, mataro and cinsaut. The colour is distinctly deeper than the '14 Papillon, which is as it should be. This brings the Barossa Valley into close contact with high quality Rhone Valley wines, its intensity and vibrancy wonderful to see - and flow in a mouthfilling stream of red fruits, both fresh and poached, with a garland of spice and dusty tannins providing a savoury finish."
