A refined yet powerful Rasteau from hometown experts, Soumade. The Prestige is grown on the fringes of the Ventabren alpine terrace, which adds limestone content to the famous yellow and blue clay (water-retaining properties of clay help fruit in the area's baking heat). The result is a Grenache-led wine that is rich but also bright and perfumed, with Southern Rhone herbal spice. A serious delight, this is what makes Soumade specialists in Rasteau.

Its Origins

Domaine La Soumade was founded by André Roméro in 1979. By 1990, this passionate winegrower had achieved his long-cherished ambition of selling his entire production in bottle. And in 1996, André was joined by his son Frédéric, after he had obtained his BEPA Diploma in viticulture and oenology. A new modern winery was built in 2002, the same year that a partnership with consultant Stéphane Derenoncourt and his team began. Stéphane encouraged gentler and more finely-tuned vinification techniques, so as to better reflect the unique expression and potential of the terroir. Without doubt, the wines have achieved greater finesse and purity. As of today, the estate covers 26 hectares in the commune of Rasteau and an additional hectare in Gigondas - a small terraced vineyard near the Dentelles de Montmirail. The clay - limestone soils of Rasteau produce naturally powerful wines with great ageing potential.

What The Critics Say

92/100 Parker's Wine Advocate, Joe Czerwinski

"The 2015 Rasteau Prestige is yet another bottling from this domaine that punches above its weight. Aged half in foudre and half in concrete, it shows off attractive scents of garrigue and anise, then rounds out the full-bodied palate with black cherry fruit and a long, richly textured finish. -- It was the end of a long day by the time I arrived at Andre Romero's Domaine La Soumade in Rasteau. Despite the late hour, the patriarch himself was there to greet me, along with his son, Frédéric. It had been close to ten years since my previous visit, and I'm pleased to report that the wines have grown more refined and elegant over that time." Drink 2017 - 2025

Robert Parker

“The superstar of Rasteau is Andre Romero, who produces five cuvees of drop-dead delicious red wine.”
