70% Grenache noir; 20% Syrah; 10% Mourvèdre
Domaine La Soumade was founded by André Roméro in 1979. By 1990, this passionate winegrower had achieved his long-cherished ambition of selling his entire production in bottle. And in 1996, André was joined by his son Frédéric, after he had obtained his BEPA Diploma in viticulture and oenology. A new modern winery was built in 2002, the same year that a partnership with consultant Stéphane Derenoncourt and his team began. Stéphane encouraged gentler and more finely-tuned vinification techniques, so as to better reflect the unique expression and potential of the terroir. Without doubt, the wines have achieved greater finesse and purity. As of today, the estate covers 26 hectares in the commune of Rasteau and an additional hectare in Gigondas - a small terraced vineyard near the Dentelles de Montmirail. The clay - limestone soils of Rasteau produce naturally powerful wines with great ageing potential.
What The Critics Say

"80% destemmed, matured in foudres for 15 months. Violets, blueberries and damsons on the nose - really open and beguiling aromas. Medium-bodied, but wonderfully caressing fruit and tannin. Lovely concentration and integral freshness. Long finish. A wine of considerable class."

"Tasted blind. Blackish purple. High toned. Very fleshy and nicely judged. Really quite forward with the mass of ripe fruit almost disguising the tannins completely. Very impressive. Good sappy energy. Long. 70% Grenache, 20% Syrah, 10% Mourvèdre. Vinified in open-top, wooden tronconic vats. Aged in 40-hl foudres. Tank sample." Drink 2019 - 2025

"This impressive, super ripe, full-bodied wine features black cherries and stone fruit but also fresh floral notes. There are rich tannins but also a vibrant, fruit-driven finish. Drink it over the next 5-8 years.
It had been close to ten years since my previous visit, and I'm pleased to report that the wines have grown more refined and elegant over that time."
