A modern classic of Aussie Chard that shows you what a more moderate, elevated climate can do for their whites. This one is flinty, nutty and citric and everything we hope for in our best Kiwi examples but with an effortless mineral elegance and restraint of which, frankly, our best producers would be envious. A world legend of stylish Chardonnay and supreme value, the M3 is a benchmark to delicious to ignore.

Its Origins

Shaw + Smith began over a long lunch in 1989 when cousins Martin Shaw and Michael Hill Smith decided to realise a long held dream to make wine together. They specialise in Sauvignon Blanc, M3 Chardonnay, cool climate Shiraz and Pinot Noir.

What The Critics Say

97/100 Halliday's Australian Wine Companion, James Halliday

"M3 now comes from selected sites over the Adelaide Hills, not from the vineyard previously called M3. Pale straw-green; it may be autosuggestion, but this has great freshness, vibrancy and finesse, the flavours pitched halfway between white peach/stone fruit on the one hand, grapefruit/citrus on the other. Obviously fermented in French oak, but is not obviously oaky." Drink by 2023

95/100 Toni Patterson MW

"One of Australia's great chardonnays. Incredibly complex with wafting nutty top notes, plus hints of oatmeal and citrus zest. The palate is bright and wildly intense with lemon delicious, white nectarine and nougat. Bright and superbly well-integrated acidity. Although this fine Adelaide Hills wine is completely delicious now, it is an infant and will grow and evolve with time in bottle. 07 MAY 2017." Drink 2017 - 2023

94/100 The Wine Front, Campbell Mattinson

"Here we have power; here we have funk-driven complexity; here we have a long sling of apple-like acidity. It’s a fine, detailed, aspirational white wine, crackling with quality, endowed with just-enough texture and just-enough fruit flavour. There’s a coiled aspect to this wine; its best days are not yet with us, but they’re coming. It’s all balanced on a pin head, in the best of ways."
