Elegant and finely-textured white. Usually a Swiss grape, this rare Chasselas from Alsace is from vines planted in 1940 - yes, 1940! - and offers a quintessentially European white wine style. If you are sick of fruit-driven whites or just want to try a new variety, this Chasselas is a delightfully delicate, uncomplicated and subtly perfect aperitif. What a way to unwind of an evening! This rare gem is exclusive to us and in short supply.

Its Origins

Bernard Schoffit is a brilliant pioneer in Alsace’s greatest Grand Cru, Rangen de Thann. The domaine, started by Bernard’s father Robert at 10 hectares, is situated near Colmar. 25 years ago, Bernard, then still very young, embarked on an ambitious program of buying land in Rangen, around the Clos St. Theobold. Totaling nearly 6.5 hectares, a good part of it had been abandoned because it was too steep to work. Through sheer determination and ambition, he has now reclaimed all 6.5 hectares. From these incredibly steep slopes, with incredibly low yields, he is making simply extraordinary wine from each plot he grows. Bernard’s gift for wine-making is not reserved only for his Rangen wines. In his vineyards near Colmar he practices the same rigorous approach to yields. These yields, very old vines, and Bernard’s guiding hand produce wines that are all marked by the following characteristics: intensity, very pure varietal character, great concentration of fruit and richness on the palate, and perfect acidity to balance and carry this weight into a long and brilliant finish. Organic.

What The Critics Say

90/100 Wine Enthusiast ( 2014 vintage )

"The slightest whiff of pepper on the nose leads to a spiced, leesy and slender palate on this unusual Alsace resident: it's Switzerland's Chasselas making an appearance. This is slender and while the nose is shy, the palate provides ample textures. Make as a local and have this with fresh white asparagus. The wine has a great acidic spine and luminous freshness."

89/100 Parker's Wine Advocate, Jeb Dunnuck ( 2014 vintage )

"One of the last producers to keep the Chasselas grape (it doubles as a table grape), Domaine Schoffit’s 2014 Chasselas Vieilles Vignes offers classy, crisp notes of tangerine, honeyed citrus and mint in its lively, fresh, yet still textured and mouth-coating personality. Possessing less than two grams residual sugar and bright acidity, it will be incredibly versatile on the dinner table and drink nicely for at least 2-3 years." Drink 2015 - 2018
