Back in 1986, David and Mark Mason, with friend and winemaker Tony Bish, began with a simple philosophy of making more wine than they could drink, and sharing the rest. They had the perfect place to make it happen, under the shade of Puketapu (sacred hill), along the white, volcanic cliffs and river land gravels of the Dartmoor Valley in Hawke’s Bay. They were precious days by the river with friends, family and food. Sacred Hill is recognised as one of New Zealand's leading, multi award winning wineries. Focusing on the production of premium 'handcrafted' varietal wines the company's estate vineyards are now located in New Zealand's leading grape growing regions of Marlborough, Hawke's Bay and Central Otago.
What The Critics Say
97/100 Bob Campbell
"An aristocrat among NZ chardonnays. Mendoza clone concentration is assisted by old vine intensity has produced a rich, weighty wine with real power. I opened a bottle of 2006 Rifleman’s shortly after tasting this wine and can endorse its ageing ability. Strong citrus, mineral, bran biscuit, brioche and spicy oak. Terrific wine."

"Bright yellow colour with pale golden hues and some depth, lighter edged. This has a beautifully refined youthfully fresh nose with firm and tightly bound aromas of citrus fruits along with exotic tropical fruit and floral elements, entwined with elegant mealy, nutty, creamy barrel-ferment and fragrant oak notes, and flinty nuances providing interest and detail. Medium-full bodied, the palate features a very finely proportioned structure with a tight and subtly concentrated, intense core of citrus and white stonefruits, exotic floral and tropical fruit elements and harmoniously balanced, mealy, nutty oak. The mouthfeel is very smooth-textured and enlivened by refreshing acidity and the wine flows seamlessly unfolding spice and mineral nuances. The finish is very long and sustained, with a balance of succulence and fine textures. This is a beautifully elegant, fresh and refined Chardonnay with subtle richness and layers of exotic complexities. Serve with seafood, poultry and pork over the next 6+ years. Old vine Mendoza clone from the ‘Riflemans Terraces’, hand-picked, WBP and indigenous yeast barrel-fermented to 13.5% alc., the wine aged 12 months in 80% new French oak with some batonnage and 100% MLF. 19.5-/20 Aug 2016 RRP $74.99"
5 Stars Michael Cooper
Sacred Hill’s flagship Chardonnay is one of New Zealand’s greatest – powerful yet elegant, with striking intensity and outstanding cellaring potential. Grown in the cool, inland, elevated (100 metres above sea level) Riflemans Terraces Vineyard in the Dartmoor Valley of Hawke's Bay, it is hand-picked from mature, own-rooted, Mendoza-clone vines and fermented with indigenous yeasts in French oak barriques (new and one year old), with some malolactic fermentation. The 2015 vintage (5*) is bright, light lemon/green. Lovely in its youth, it is finely poised, with pure, vibrant, peachy, citrusy flavours to the fore, very finely integrated oak, great harmony, and a very long finish. Best drinking 2018+.
