45% Pinot Bianco, 35% Friulano, 20% Malvasia
Fabio and Daniela Coser established Ronco Dei Tassi in 1989 in Cormons, a township in North-Eastern Italy’s Collio Goriziano. In the terraces above the town they enjoy a semi-continental climate perfect for the Collio’s cool-climate aromatic whites, with some diurnal variation thanks to moderate inland elevation and the nearby hills protection from the northern cold. These surrounding hills on the border with Slovenia, known as the Plessiva, also provide a sanctuary for wildlife, including badgers (Tassi), of which whole families would appear in the vineyard when the grapes were ripe - thus giving the winery its name ‘terrace of the badgers’. Helped by their two sons Matteo and Enrico, Ronco Dei Tassi remains a family affair with the rigorous attention in vineyard and winery necessary to produce white wines with aromatic purity in a relatively damp climate. As leaders in their local tradition, the estate presents mainly varietally labelled offerings including familiar names Pinot Grigio, Friulano, Ribolla Gialla, Malvasia and also Sauvignon Blanc, while even their Collio DOC wines tend to be superb examples of single local varietals.
What The Critics Say
90/100 Wine Enthusiast
"This blend of Friulano, Malvasia Istriana and Pinot Bianco has ripe pear, fragrant yellow flower, herb and graphite aromas. The elegant, medium-bodied palate doles out yellow apple, candied lemon drop and bitter almond hints, with fresh acidity."
