A major factor in Riverby’s success is the total control over all grape production on the single estate vineyard. A significant portion of the vineyard consists of vines with considerable age and this is complemented by slightly younger vines utilising modern clones. This combination of vine age and meticulous clonal selection is readily apparent in the high quality fruit being produced. Vines were first planted in 1989; on land that had previously been used for cropping and sheep farming. Further plantings have continued over the years, until now over 70 hectares are planted out in Sauvignon Blanc, Chardonnay, Pinot Noir, Riesling, Pinot Gris, Semillon, and Syrah. The most recent planting is of Gruner Veltliner. As part of Riverby’s focus on viticultural excellence, yields are kept very low and several varieties are hand picked. Sustainable grape-growing techniques are practiced throughout the whole grape-growing and winemaking cycle.
What The Critics Say
93/100 Sam Kim
"This is taut and racy, and delivers impressive fruit concentration. Delicately fragrant aromas of grapefruit, lemon pith and floral with a hint of flint on the nose. The palate is beautifully weighted and finely textured, and shows excellent purity as well as elegant complexity, enhanced by bright acidity. A wonderfully dry and mouth-wateringly tasty. At its best: now to 2019. $24.00. www.riverbyestate.com. May 2016." Drink 2017 - 2019
93/100 Bob Campbell MW (2014 vintage)
"One of the better and more flavoursome local Gruner Veltliners that I have tasted. It has plenty of weight and typical citrus, fresh herb/green tea flavours with a suggestion of white pepper. Very impressive wine with good weight and a lengthy finish 2/2/2015."
17/20 Raymond Chan (2014 vintage)
"Bright straw-yellow colour with light golden hues. This has a very fresh and tightly held nose, somewhat shy, with delicate aromas of white stonefruits, white florals and minerals, with subtle herb and exotic tropical fruit suggestions. Waxy, lanolin-like elements add to the interest and detail, the nose still fresh and primary expression. Dry to taste and elegant in proportion, the flavours of white florals and stonefruits, herbs and white pepper are restrained, but form a good core with real presence, revealing richness and succulence. The palate follows a fine, textural line, gently enlivened by discreet acidity. Harmoniously balanced, the wine flows smoothly to a softly concentrated, lon, lingering finish with ethereal stonefruit and floral notes. This is an elegant, fine-textured dry Gruner Veltliner with good palate presence and undeveloped flavours. It will become richer over the next 3-4 years. Match with Mediterranean and Asian fare. A very favourable vintage for the variety, second crop from the ‘Riverby’ vineyard. Hand-picked fruit fermented in stainless-steel to 12.5% alc. and 3.8 g/L RS. 17.0+/20 Apr 2015 RRP $24.00"
