Single-vineyard Pinot Noir of the highest standard. A wine of precision and "unforced masculinity", the Tinker's is drawn from Rippon's oldest vines in rocky schist soils, on the gentle slopes next to Lake Wanaka. Family owned, biodynamically grown and made with the utmost care and expertise, this is an elegant and simply wonderful Pinot to decant of cellar for some time.

Pinot Noir

Its Origins

Rippon's story begins in 1912 when Sir Percy Sargood bought a high country station on the western flanks of Lake Wanaka. Three decades later, while serving in the Second World War as a submarine lieutenant, Percy's grandson, Rolfe Mills, was struck by the vines growing on the schist slopes of the Douro Valley that reminded him of those back in Wanaka and, with that, a hunch was born. In 1975, Rolfe and his wife Lois began planting experimental vines and, in 1982 began the commercial planting of the 15ha that today comprise Rippon. Biodynamic farming, wild ferments, no irrigation and some of Central Otago’s oldest vines on their own roots all help to produce fruit and wines which are true to their place.

What The Critics Say

94+/100 Parker's Wine Advocate, Joe Czerwinski

"Reticent on the nose, the 2015 Tinker's Field Mature Vine Pinot Noir is all about contained power at this stage. It's concentrated and intense, with ample weight and richness, ripe, finely textured tannins and terrific persistence. Give it enough time in the glass and vigorous swirling, and notes of berry and spice begin to emerge, and the tannins loosen their grip on the finish. In New Zealand Pinot Noir terms, this is as close to a vin de garde as you're likely to find." Drink 2020 - 2030

5 Stars Michael Cooper

"Named after Rippon's co-founder, Rolfe Mills ('Tink' to his friends), this exceptional wine is based on 'the oldest vines on the property'. Grown on a north-facing slope at Lake Wanaka, in Central Otago, it is matured for 17 months in French oak barriques (30 per cent new), and bottled without fining or filtering. The 2015 vintage (5*) is a deeply coloured, notably weighty and savoury red, with rich plum/spice flavours and impressive complexity. Firmly structured, it should be long-lived; open 2022+."

99/100 James Suckling

“A sultry, stony and savoury expression, offering wild black fruit, beef stock, wet stones, woody spices and a flicker of smouldering, flinty rock. Entrancingly particular now, but there’s much more to come in time. The palate cuts a strong, powerful and contained swathe of mouth-wateringly taut tannins. Explosive and directional power on the palate with lustrous, dark fruit that holds deep into the chasm-like finish. From a single-vineyard parcel on a north-facing site that is home to the oldest vines on the property. Drink in 2023.”
