A superb classic of Sauvignon-Semillon from Waipara. This rarer style is Bordeaux-influenced and food-orientated. Offering lovely texture and complexity, 30% Semillon is fuller bodied and introduces a citrus and waxy-mineral element that rounds out Sauvignon's brighter acid and aromatic. This really sings with seafood but will suit any white meat dinners. Delicious!

Its Origins

Located in arguably New Zealand's most exciting wine region of North Canterbury (more specifically, Waipara), albeit sparsely scattered with wine estates it is at the forefront of interesting and unique wines in NZ. This is due in part to a fabulous free-draining, well protected terroir. Pegasus Bay is run by the Donaldson family who were pioneers in the region and have been involved with local grape growing and winemaking since the 1970's. The whole family are involved in the process from grape to bottle, and a deep respect for the land, with a long term view towards vine and soil health typifies the Donaldson Family's approach to grape growing. Pegasus Bay is an accredited member of the NZWG sustainable viticulture program and are firm believers of using natural methods to combat pests and diseases rather than the application of unnecessary pesticides and herbicides.

What The Critics Say

19/20 Raymond Chan

"A full and voluminous nose with deeply packed aromas showing an array of green stonefruits including greengages and nectarines, along with gooseberry, herb and grassy nuances, and soft nutty oak elements. Dry to taste and medium-full bodied, the palate possesses bold, intense and up-front flavours of greengages, nectarines, green stonefruits and a subtle layer of nutty oak. The palate is mouthfilling and flavoursome, with a deep core, and the wine flows along a fine-textured line of fruit extract. The mouthfeel is fresh with lacy acidity providing tension, enhancing the linearity. The wine carries to a long and sustained, vibrant finish of green stonefruits. Match with herb-marinated poultry and pork dishes over the next 3-4+ years. A blend of 70% Sauvignon Blanc and 30% Semillon, from 30 y.o. vines, indigenous yeast fermented with 15% of the Sauvignon in new French oak barriques and the Semillon in seasoned puncheons to 13.9% alc., the wine aged 8 months on lees. 19.0/20 Mar 2017 RRP $31.00." 92/100 Bob Campbell MW

"Quite an oaky wine with a strong oak influence on both the nose and palate. Richly textural white with the sort of weight and grip I expect from chardonnay. Quite a pleasing, complex wine with power and a lengthy finish. A distinctly unique wine with a character all of its own 19/5/2017." Drink 2017 - 2021
