A serious Bordeux blend from Pegasus Bay. Only produced in the best years, the Maestro represents the pinnacle for a slightly lesser known (and under-valued) category in Waipara red wine. Lashings of fruit ripeness and depth are held together by beautifully ageworthy and food freindly tannins. Decant this rare beauty now, or give it pride place in your cellar.

Its Origins

Located in arguably New Zealand's most exciting wine region of North Canterbury (more specifically, Waipara), albeit sparsely scattered with wine estates it is at the forefront of interesting and unique wines in NZ. This is due in part to a fabulous free-draining, well protected terroir. Pegasus Bay is run by the Donaldson family who were pioneers in the region and have been involved with local grape growing and winemaking since the 1970's. The whole family are involved in the process from grape to bottle, and a deep respect for the land, with a long term view towards vine and soil health typifies the Donaldson Family's approach to grape growing. Pegasus Bay is an accredited member of the NZWG sustainable viticulture program and are firm believers of using natural methods to combat pests and diseases rather than the application of unnecessary pesticides and herbicides.

What The Critics Say

95/100 Cameron Douglas MS

"Complex bouquet of dark red fruits led by Doris plum, blackberry and dark spiced chocolate. Toasty wood spices of clove and baked vanilla, a steely haunt adds complexity and depth. Dry with a contrasting core of red berry fruits, chocolate and wood spice. Firm to fine tannins and warming alcohol. Medium+ acidity and dark fruited core. Coming into balance slowly. Lengthy fine finish." Drink 2019 - 2029

96/100 Bob Campbell MW

"Inky red with impressive concentration and good weight together with a seductively silken texture - a beguiling combination. Christmas cake, dried fruit and spice flavours together with chocolate/mocha, vanilla and new leather. 12/4/2018." Drink 2018 - 2023

5 Stars Michael Cooper

"Maturing very gracefully, the 2015 vintage (5*) ? the first since 2009 ? is a Waipara, North Canterbury blend of Merlot (60 per cent), Cabernet Sauvignon (30 per cent) and Malbec (10 per cent), from vines over 30 years old. Barrel-aged for two years (50 per cent new), it is deep and youthful in colour, with substantial body and rich, vibrant blackcurrant, plum and spice flavours, smooth and long. Already delicious, it should break into full stride 2021+." Drink 2018 - 2028
