Everything beautiful about Pinot Noir is captured in the top wine from Neudorf. Effortlessly on show are floral, herbal, savoury and mineral touches, with fruit that has its own richness and depth but which plays an almost a supporting role to the food-friendly elegance. One of the world's best labels of Pinot Noir. This wine sells out -- buy!

Pinot Noir

Its Origins

Nelson is the sunniest viticultural region in New Zealand. Relatively isolated, it has never developed into large scale production but several wineries have established an excellent reputation for quality. Prime amongst these is Neudorf, created by pioneers Tim & Judy Finn back in the late 1970s. The winery buildings have developed steadily since 1980, and so has the reputation of this excellent producer specialising predominantly in Chardonnay and Pinot Noir. Their flagship wines are designated by the subregion of Moutere. The Neudorf estate, lying on a mix of glacial outwash clay, now represents 12ha, though buys in fruit from a further 30ha (of managed vineyards). The viticulture is sustainable "lutte raisonnée" with organic practices being introduced since 2008. The wines are all made with minimal intervention; hand harvesting, wild yeast, low S02 and soft, supporting oak.

What The Critics Say

96/100 Bob Campbell MW

"Elegant pinot noir with bright cherry, rose petal, mineral, raspberry and spicy oak flavours. A high energy wine, with impressive purity and power delivered with great subtlety. Long and linear. Easy to love now but with good cellaring potential 27/8/2017." Drink 2017 - 2023

95/100 Cameron Douglas Master Sommelier

"An excellent bouquet of Pinot Noir – ticking all the boxes of allure, ripeness of fruit and concentration with aromas & flavours of cherry then other light red berry fruits – a light tarty edge shows off the youth alongside medium+ acidity and firm tannins with chalky to fine textures; a light savoury complexity and judicious measure of oak completes this wine. Another fine example from the Neudorf stable – with both immediate drinkability as well as cellar potential; long and complex finish."

95/100 Huon Hooke

"Medium to deep red colour with a tinge of purple. The bouquet is savoury, bold and complex, with charcuterie and stewed plum notes, and the palate is medium to full-bodied and quite intense, with ample tannins giving a drying effect on the back-palate and a very persistent aftertaste. A big and quite powerful pinot with a future ahead of it. 03 NOV 2017." Drink 2017 - 2030
