Muddy water was born when Jane and Michael East first planted their vineyard in the Waipara Valley in 1993 with a range of experimental varieties – what worked, stayed, and what didn't thrive was pulled out. The fertile limestone-washed soils that mirror the calcareous clay of Burgundy were perfect for Pinot Noir and Chardonnay. The first wines released in 1996 quickly established Muddy Water Estate as one of the first real high quality producers in the area, and much of the wine today is still being made from those original vines - the majority of which are ungrafted. The first certified organic winery in Canterbury, they now also employ biodynamic methods for soil management, and use minimal intervention in the winemaking process to let the site express itself to its full potential.
