A stunning deal on this massive over-achiever! While scooping the trophy from the Royal Easter Show, this wine beat out the big boys – i.e. well-known $45-$60 reserve wines from the hotter vintage of 2013. It did this by sheer quality and focus, with bright black and red fruits set in a fine trannin structure and proper food-friendly acidity. All class, this wine will decant nicely and match a bit of really serious dinner. 2015 was a great vintage for the area, with this wine exhibiting perfect ripe (and not over-ripe) fruit. Ignore the crazy price - this classic wine from the Mission VS range is proper stuff. Buy, buy, buy!

Its Origins

Mission Estate is New Zealand’s oldest winery. The French Marist Mission was established in Hawkes Bay in 1851, producing table and sacramental wine on its property. The first recorded sale of wine dated to 1870 and Mission Estate remained in production while New Zealand spent more than a century as a very small wine consumer. But as the market exploded late last century their vineyards, infrastructure and traditional knowledge placed them far ahead of the curve on quality wine production. Today they still work hard to remain there, with a commanding portfolio from widely available labels up to top single vineyard wines. Most remarkable perhaps, for fine wine customers, have been the grey-labelled VS series wines, which for years have delivered under $20 Chardonnay, Syrah and other varieties made with reliably impressive attention to quality, harmony and finesse.

What The Critics Say

4 Stars Raymond Chan

"A softly full, well-packed, dense nose, the aromas of ripe dark-red plums and red berry fruit a little restrained, but harmoniously entwined with earthy, dark herb and cedary oak nuances. Medium-full bodied, the palate is full with harmoniously melded flavours of dark-red plum and berry fruit flavours along with subtle notes of earth, herbs and cedary oak. The fruit is supported by fine-grained tannin extraction, and the mouthfeel is soft from integrated acidity. The flavours carry to a gentle finish of plums and earth. Match with roasted red meats and casseroles over the next 4+ years. Fruit from various sites including the company’s ‘Mere Road’ vineyard in the Gimblett Gravels, fermented to 13.8% alc., the wine aged 12 months in French oak barriques and tank. 17.0+/20 Feb 2017 RRP $20.00"

Wine Orbit, Sam Kim

"It is beautifully lifted on the nose showing black/blueberry, plum, dried herb and toasted nut characters. The palate is succulent and silky, and delivers attractive fruit intensity, nicely framed by fine tannins. A flavoursome medium-full-bodied red displaying lovely fruit flavours and a lingering smooth finish. At its best: now to 2019. $20.00. www.missionestate.co.nz. Feb 2017."
