Mills Reef’s top Chardonnay is consistently a richer style, with impressive presence of ripe stonefruit and oily weight on the palate. Once again the great vintage of 2015 produced a drink-now ripeness, while Mills Reef expertly enhance that with bright acidity and of course barrel aging that builds the Elspeth for early balance, or optional development in cellar.

Its Origins

Mills Reef Winery was established in 1989 by the Preston family. Through commitment and dedication to excellence, the Mills Reef brand has established itself as one of New Zealand's premium labels with a particular reputation for outstanding Bordeaux varietal reds and Syrah. The winery is located on 20 acres of beautifully landscaped grounds in a semi-rural setting, just 5 minutes drive from Tauranga's CBD. The vineyards are located in the Hawke’s Bay area, and two of the flagship vineyards, the Mere Road Vineyard and the Mills Reef Trust Vineyard are located right in the heart of the world-renowned Gimblett Gravels. The Mere Road is a 16 hectare block painstakingly managed for low yields to produce the very best grapes for the multi-award winning ‘Elspeth’ and ‘Reserve’ wines.

What The Critics Say

5 Stars Michael Cooper

"Mills Reef's flagship Chardonnay is consistently rewarding and a classic regional style. The 2015 (5*) is a top vintage. Bright, light lemon/green, it is fragrant, with rich, vibrant grapefruit and stone-fruit flavours, a slightly buttery note, and a long, very harmonious finish. Already delicious, it's a very elegant and age-worthy wine." Drink 2017 - 2021

Gold Medal, Hawkes Bay Wine Awards 2017
95/100 Bob Campbell (2014 vintage)

"Very attractive Chardonnay with sweet peach and apricot fruit flavours restrained by juicy acidity, a hint of chalky mineral flavour and very fine tannins. Silken textured with acidity driving a lengthy finish. Accessible and attractive drinking now but has potential to develop well."
