Brothers Bill and Ross Spence, pioneers of the New Zealand Sauvignon Blanc phenomenon, began Matua in the late 60's in a tin shed. Now Matua is a formidable empire, with vineyard holdings all over the country. Since 2008 senior winemaker Nikolai St George has taken the estate to new heights, with new vineyard and varietal interests, including the Single Vineyard range. This Marlborough Single Vineyard Chardonnay is one of the latest - 2011 is the first commercial vintage - and comes from a highly regarded site for potentially great wine. The wine has been garnering international awards every vintage since.
What The Critics Say
93/100 Bob Campbell (2013 vintage)
"Ripe, flavoursome Chardonnay with appealing peach, nectarine and grapefruit against a savoury background of hazelnut and bran biscuit. Nicely balanced with a pleasantly crisp finish. 7/10/2014."
Courier Mail Brisbane, Mike Frost (2014 vintage)
"From New Zealand’s Marlborough region, this shows citrus and melon characters on the nose and palate, with a touch of cream and a long, crisp palate. Enjoy over the next five years with chicken, veal or richer seafood dishes."
