An intense and "dramatic" Bordeaux blend from Waiheke legends, Man O' War. With Merlot and Cabernet Franc leading three other grapes, the palate is full and plush as well as complex, toasty and spicy. Huge fruit depth as well as eminent class and style make this another terribly satisfying and charismatic Man O' War, to drink now or cellar.

Its Origins

First planted in 1993, at the eastern end of Waiheke Island, Man O’ War consists of 150 acres of vines planted in 76 individual hillside blocks, each with a distinct soil profile and microclimate.
Every single block bears the footprints, and sometimes the names, of those who transformed Man O’ War’s rugged hillsides into a spectacular patchwork of vines. Helmed by winemaker Duncan McTavish and vineyard manager Matt Allen, the wines represent a legacy of preservation and great respect for the land and its history.

What The Critics Say

95/100 James Suckling

"A majestic wine that has savoury, earthy, terra-cotta aromas with spiced dark berries, sweet-woody notes, mushrooms and poached blood plums. The palate has a rich and attractive feel with fresh, ripe and plush flavours that carry a wealth of rich dark and ripe berries and a vibrant hold on the finish. A blend of cabernet franc, petit Verdot, merlot, Malbec and cabernet sauvignon. Drink now. 14 Aug, 2019 "

96/100 Bob Campbell MW (2014 vintage)

"A flavoursome blend of cabernet franc, merlot, petit verdot, cabernet sauvignon and malbec from an excellent vintage. Rich, mellow red, with emerging bottle age adding extra interest to a medley of ripe berry fruits, mixed spice and a suggestion of floral character. A satisfyingly complex wine that promises to age well." Drink 2019 to 2024

95/100 Wine Orbit, Sam Kim (2013 vintage)

"A dramatic Bordeaux-style, offering glorious aromas of creme de cassis, spiced plum, cocoa, cedar and cigar box on the nose, leading to a concentrated palate that is magnificently weighted and expansive. The wine offers both fruit richness and savoury complexity, superbly enhanced by velvety texture and silky tannins. Harmonious and symphonic with layers of engaging delicious flavours. A blend of cabernet franc, merlot, petit verdot, malbec and cabernet sauvignon. At its best: now to 2023. $49.50. www.manowarvineyards.co.nz. May 2018." Drink 2018 - 2023
