First planted in 1993, at the eastern end of Waiheke Island, Man O’ War consists of 150 acres of vines planted in 76 individual hillside blocks, each with a distinct soil profile and microclimate.
Every single block bears the footprints, and sometimes the names, of those who transformed Man O’ War’s rugged hillsides into a spectacular patchwork of vines. Helmed by winemaker Duncan McTavish and vineyard manager Matt Allen, the wines represent a legacy of preservation and great respect for the land and its history.
What The Critics Say
95/100 Wine Orbit, Sam Kim (2015 vintage)
"A spectacular expression of the variety, this is impressively ripe and gratifying, exhibiting mixed berry compote, mocha, dried flower and toasted hazelnut characters on the nose. The palate is equally satisfying with delectable fruit flavours and seductive oak complexity, wonderfully enhanced by velvety mouthfeel and supple tannins. The wine is powerful and graceful at the same time, and flows seamlessly to a lingering delicious finish. At its best: now to 2022. $55.00. www.manowarvineyards.co.nz. April 2017." Drink 2017 - 2022
94/100 Bob Campbell MW (2015 vintage)
"Moderately dense syrah with raspberry, cranberry, violet, dried herb, pepper, old leather and spice/anise flavours. A core of sweet fruit is balanced by peppery tannins. An elegant rather than a blockbuster wine with obvious power. 4/5/2016" Drink 2016 - 2028
18/20 JancisRobinson.com (2013 vintage)
"Awesome ripe cherry liqueur then an enticing pepper and blackberry note. Wonderful spiciness. Fully loaded and absolutely tremendous typicality. 5% whole cluster fermentation.(RH)"
