Leeuwin Estate is one of the founding wineries of the now famous Margaret River district. In 1972, legendary Napa Valley winemaker, Robert Mondavi, first identified the future site of the Leeuwin vineyard as being ideal for the production of premium wine and provided early mentorship to Denis and Tricia Horgan who founded Leeuwin Estate in 1974. The initial vineyards were planted by hand over a five year period from 1975. Featuring state-of-the art facilities, the winery building was opened in 1978, celebrating with a trial vintage. Leeuwin enjoyed its first commercial vintage in 1979, and was thrust into the international spotlight when Decanter Magazine gave its highest recommendation to the 1980 "Art Series" Chardonnay in an international blind tasting.
What The Critics Say
95/100 Halliday's Wine Companion, James Halliday
"If you didn't know about its Art Series sibling, you would be perfectly happy to accept this as a high class part of the Leeuwin Estate portfolio (which in a sense it is). A beautifully balanced wine, in terms both of its suite of stone fruit, citrus and pear flavours, and of the subtle barrel-ferment oak inputs. Its length is no less impressive." Drink by 2025
92/100 Wine Enthusiast
"From one of Margaret River's leading Chardonnay producers, the 2015 Prelude doesn't disappoint. It's a nutty, smokey, toasty, melony beauty. Perfectly in balance, with a chalky texture and medium to light body, it wears its heart on its sleeve and is drinking perfectly now, but will gain more even more complexity with a few years in bottle."
92/100 The Wine Front, Gary Walsh
"Pear and lime, whiff of butter and cloves, toast and vanilla. Full flavoured, lemon curd on buttered toast, pears studded with spice, subtle warmth and contrast of cool acidity. Finishes savoury and almost chalky, with sure length of flavour. Bolder Chardonnay done well."
