A serious Rhone red from limestone soils and very old vines planted in 1905! The lack of Syrah gives Mourvedre a rare chance to shine, its 40% bringing spicy, savoury dimension to the body of Grenache. Elegant tannin structure offers more savoury interest with aging: great potential for this price. This wonderful offering shows why L'Oratoire are considered local masters. An X factor wine that's also an in-house favourite. Try this!

Its Origins

Brothers Frédéric and François Alary are the tenth generation of winemakers to tend this estate in the Côtes-du-Rhône over the last 300 years (the family history goes back to 1692). They succeeded their father in 1984, and cultivate 27HA of some of the best plots in Cairanne. The Alarys’ vineyards are located on steep hills of two main lieux-dits, les Douyes and St-Martin.
The estate takes its name from the small chapel (oratoire) that stands in this last plot. The soil is very rocky, with a high proportion of limestone and two types of clay, yellow on the surface and blue deeper down. Les Douyes’ exposure is east, northeast and well-suited to growing white grapes and Syrah, all early maturing varietals. St-Martin is warmer, facing south, south-west and that’s where Grenache and Mourvèdre grow. Most of the vines are over 40 years old and some are reaching their 100s. Organic/traditional.

What The Critics Say

93/100 Wine Advocate, Joe Czerwinski

"Easily the equal of many wines from more illustrious appellations, the 2015 Cairanne les Douyes is a blend of old-vine Grenache (60%) and Mourvèdre (40%) that spent 18 months in foudre prior to bottling. Yields were a ridiculously low 15 hectoliters per hectare. Intense but still only medium to full-bodied, this is richly tannic and silky at the same time, boasting flavors of cola, raspberries and spice that linger elegantly on the finish." Drink 2017 - 2025

16.5/20 Jancis Robinson

"L’Oratoire Saint Martin was founded in 1692, on the site of a Catholic oratory. The brothers, Frédéric and François Alary represent the 10th generation. Les Douyes is a blend of 60% Grenache and 40% Mourvèdre, its style informed by distinctive ‘blue’ clay soil and old vines. (Simon Field MW). Deep mulberry purple. Peppery and a tiny bit stewed on the nose, especially when tasted directly after the Native Visan. Hint of spearmint and then amazingly broad and sweet on the palate. Tastes much more evolved than the Visan. A charmer. Already ready." Drink 2016 - 2021

Bob Campbell (previous vintage)

"This is no ordinary Cotes du Rhone, in fact I'd go so far as to saying it's the best I've ever tasted."
