A premium Sonoma Chardonnay from a very special site. Within the famous Durrell vineyard, the Stone Cote is a small plot on ancient riverbed pebbles with virtually no topsoil, causing the struggling vines to set down deep roots. A cool maritime climate ensures the longer ripening of this deep-fruited and mineral-inflected style. Supreme stuff to consume or cellar -- limited stocks!

Its Origins

Hartford is an estate belonging to the Jackson Family holdings. Hartford’s wines are rare. Year after year, they rank among the most sought-after collectables from California. Since the 1994 vintage, owners Don and Jenny Hartford have built the winery’s reputation on limited-production, handmade, single-vineyard Chardonnays, Pinot Noirs and Old Vine Zinfandels from some of Northern California’s greatest vineyards. Hartford Family Winery is located in the town of Forestville, roughly 15 miles from the Pacific Ocean. This is the heart of the famed Russian River Valley. In addition to their own estate, Hartford harvests fruit from a handful of prized vineyards throughout the Russian River Valley, Green Valley, Carneros, Sonoma Coast and Anderson Valley. These are all high-reputation, low-yielding, sustainably-farmed sites situated in cool-climate sub-regions. Without exception, Hartford’s wines are intense, thought provoking and expressive of both variety and terroir. They have been served at the White House on many occasions and are staples on “Reserve” wine lists around the country. Since 2011, Jeff Stewart, a specialist in Pinot Noir, Chardonnay and Zinfandel, has been in charge of winemaking.

What The Critics Say

98/100 Jeb Dunnuck

"From blocks in the Durrell vineyard (the parcel is rolled river rocks soils), the 2015 Chardonnay Stone Côte Vineyard offers a medium gold color as well as a sensational bouquet of ripe, caramelized citrus, crushed rocks, tangerine, and marine/seashell-like aromas and flavors. Aged 16 months in 37% new French oak, it's deep, rich, and thrillingly textured, with bright, juicy acidity keeping it vibrant and focused. It's a stunning Chardonnay to drink over the coming decade." - Jeb Dunnuck, June 2018."

96+/100 Parker's Wine Advocate, Lisa Perrotti-Brown

"Stone Côte is sourced from a block within the Durell vineyard. It receives native yeast fermentation and is barrel fermented in French oak, 37% new, where it ages for 16 months prior to being bottled unfined and unfiltered. The 2015 Stone Côte Vineyard Chardonnay offers mind-blowingly gorgeous ripe pineapple, peach blossom and pink grapefruit notes with a gregarious undercurrent of candied ginger, allspice, butterscotch and brioche. Big, rich and full-bodied, there’s a seductive oiliness to the texture with fantastic concentration of a very long finish. 476 cases were made." Drink 2017 - 2024

93/100 Vinous, Antonio Galloni

"Hartford's 2015 Chardonnay Stone Côte Vineyard has turned out beautifully. Today, the mineral notes that are typical of this wine are much more present than they were when the wine was in barrel. Graphite, sage, apricot and smoke infuse this super-expressive, textured Chardonnay. This is very nicely done. The Stone Côte emerges from Hartford's portion of the Durrell Vineyard."
