Surely one of our very best Sauvignon Blanc wines. Ex-cloudy Bay winemaker Kevin Judd is a legend of the variety, and here he presents his fully serious expression. From top-stream fruit that is wild fermented in 100% oak, mostly old but with just a spicing of new wood, this wine offers complexity now or the potential to age extremely well. A wilder yet more sophisticated beast than the usual tank-fermented Marlborough Sav, this is a food wine of extreme quality.

Sauvignon Blanc

Its Origins

Greywacke is the Marlborough label of Kevin Judd, and the fulfilment of a long held dream. The name Greywacke was adopted by Kevin and his wife Kimberley for their first Marlborough vineyard located in Rapaura, named in recognition of the high prevalence of rounded greywacke river stones in the soils of the vineyard. Kevin registered the name back in 1993 with the vague notion that he might one day want to use it on a wine label of his own. This quality focused winemaking venture sources fruit from mature vineyards within the central Wairau Plains and the Southern Valleys. The wines are made by Kevin at Dog Point Winery in the lower Brancott Valley, a facility extended to him by long-standing friends and industry colleagues, Ivan Sutherland and James Healy.

What The Critics Say

96/100 Wine Orbit, Sam Kim

"Restrained and poised, this is an outstanding rendition of Greywacke's now famous Wild Sauvignon. The delicately fragrant bouquet shows dried herb, clove, almond and nectarine characters with subtle lime zest lift. The palate is concentrated and impressively weighted, yet elegant and fine, delivering excellent focus and linear mouthfeel. The wine offers pristine fruit characters with seductive savoury undertones, finishing superbly long and mouth-watering. At its best: 2018 to 2027. $38.00. www.greywacke.com. May 2017." Drink 2018 - 2027

95/100 Bob Campbell MW

"Pure, flinty wine in a bone-dry style with citrus and subtle stone fruit flavours. Nice purity with bright acidity helping drive a lengthy finish. Good weight and a suede-like texture. Impressive. Tasted in a vertical back to 2009. 12/5/2017." Drink 2017 - 2023

19.0-/20 Raymond Chan

"Very pale straw, near colourless. The nose is fresh and youthful with near exuberant and rich green stonefruit aromas of nectarines and greengages with notes of ripe capsicums and fresh herbs, unfolding a hint of smoke and nuttiness. The aromatics grow in fullness and depth with aeration. Dry to taste, very vibrantly sweet and rich in fruit, with juicy greengage, nectarine and green stonefruits. Complex detail emerges, nuts and oak? But quite subtle, with hints of creaminess. This has a tight, concentrated core and refined phenolic line. So youthful, but individual and with complexing nuances already. Fully barrel-fermented, with 7% new oak, minimal lees work, but two-thirds MLF. 19.0-/20 Jul 2017."
