This gorgeous Pinot from legends Grasshopper Rock must be the best value Pinot in Central. On the back of an Air New Zealand trophy in 2012 Grasshopper keeps on delivering. 95/100 by Bob Campbell, 19/20 from Raymond Chan and Rated a 'Classic' by M.Cooper this is one heck of a buy. ( Bob Campbell's average price for the 2015 pinot noirs he rated at 95/100 is $63.49!! ) A fine 'Burgundy' style, for under $30 it offers the kind of softness, elegance and nuance that few producers can muster under $50. As a single vineyard producing only one label, all the top fruit goes into this wine - made by ex Peregrine winemaker Pete Bartle. Serious Pinot at a snip.

Its Origins

Grasshopper Rock is one of the world’s southern most vineyards, established in 2003 and dedicated exclusively to pinot noir. The vineyard is situated on Earnscleugh Road, across the Clutha River from Alexandra. The site enjoys high sunshine hours by day and very cool temperatures by night and is sufficiently harsh and difficult to make the vines work their hardest. With extremes of heat and cold comes the risk of spring and autumn frosts, providing a demanding but rewarding environment for the production of premium pinot noir.

What The Critics Say

4.5 Stars and rated a "Classic Wine", Michael Cooper

"Estate-grown in Alexandra, this is typically a wonderful buy. The graceful 2015 vintage (4.5*) is already delicious, but well worth cellaring. Matured in French oak barriques (28 per cent new), it is deep ruby, with rich, vibrant, plummy flavours, gentle tannins, savoury notes adding complexity, and an invitingly scented bouquet." 95/100 Bob Campbell

"Attractively scented pinot noir with juicy cherry, plum, mineral and spice flavours. Subtle sweet fruits are perfectly balanced by fine, ripe tannins. An elegant, supple wine that should age gracefully. Will benefit from aeration."

19/20 Raymond Chan

"Even, dark ruby-red colour with slight purple hues, lighter on the rim. The nose is softly full and voluminous with harmoniously melded aromas of dark-red cherries and berryfruit entwined with a layering of thyme herbs, unfolding nuances of liquorice and spices, and subtle suggestions of dark plums. The aromatics build in depth, intensity and concentration with aeration. Medium-fill bodied, the palate is well-proportioned with ripe fruit flavours of dark-red and black cherries with thyme herbs interwoven with spices and liquorice. The fruit richness is stylishly restrained, but possesses real depth and concentration, and is supported by fine-grained tannin extraction and balanced structure. The acidity is integrated and lends smooth drive and line, the wine carrying to a firmly bound, lingering finish. This is a rich, ripe, stylishly concentrated Pinot Noir with flavours of black cherries and thyme herbs, liquorice and spices on a fine-structured palate. This will develop over the next 6-8 years. Serve with lamb, beef and venison. Clones 5, 777, 115, Abel and 667, fully destemmed and fermented with inoculated and indigenous yeasts to 13.8% alc., the wine spending approx. 9 days on skins and aged 10 months in 28% new French oak barriques. 19.0/20 "
