A beautiful Pinot from one of New Zealand's most famous single vineyards. Marlborough's clay hillsides have now become the 'thing' they should always have been for premium Pinot Noir. But Clayvin was 20 years ahead, being one of New Zealand's first vineyards (1993) to be close-planted with the varieties that are now making the region's premium wines famous. With great depth and presence, definition and structure, the Clayvin is an exceptional Pinot to drink now or cellar.

Pinot Noir

Its Origins

Giesen Wines are a long established label on the New Zealand scene. But as the family have gained expertise and expanded into personal projects - such as Marcel Giesen’s little known but lauded boutique Waipara estate, Bell Hill - the Giesen label too has shifted to capture their deep expertise in terroir and technique by adding new high-investment, single vineyard offerings such as those from the "revered" Clayvin vineyard, made famous by Fromm wines. The three German brother’s Alex, Theo and Marcel came to New Zealand to establish their first Riesling vineyards in Canterbury. In a then-small market, the Geisen brand grew with the times to take a position as one of New Zealand’s leading producers, and still enjoys a significant local and international distribution for various levels of high quality wine in many varieties and styles. Their new mid and upper level offerings are gaining significant recognition: wines like the Clayvin Pinot Noir is not only from great terroir but beautifully styled, placing it second to none among New Zealand’s premium examples of the grape.

What The Critics Say

96/100 Bob Campbell MW

"Dense, concentrated pinot noir with cassis, red-fleshed plum, blackberry, spice, anise and nicely integrated nutty oak flavours. A powerful wine with a lengthy finish. Showing the benefit of bottle-age but with plenty of potential to develop further. 15 MAR 2020." Drink 2020 - 2025

97/100 Wine Orbit, Sam Kim

"Exquisitely composed and perfectly proportioned, this stunning pinot exhibits dark fruit, game, violet, cedar and mixed spice aromas with nuances of cocoa and dark mushrooms. The palate delivers magnificent fruit weight and intensity, while remaining refined and restrained. A wine of great presence and style. At its best: 2019 to 2027. $60.00. www.giesen.co.nz. Aug 2017." Drink 2019 - 2027

97/100 James Suckling (2014 vintage)

"The pedigree of the vineyard speaks loudly on the nose with beautifully fresh, spiced red cherries, light herbal notes and a gently earthy thread. The palate has a deeply concentrated feel with a wealth of intense, ripe cherries and an almost unendingly long finish. Superb pinot."
