Felsina's premium Fontalloro is 100% Tuscan Sangiovese. But is labelled a 'Super Tuscan' simply because some of the old vines are outside the Classico zone (Fontalloro or Poggio al Sole are within it, but Casalino and Arcidossino are in Chianti Colli Senesi). A deliciously elegant yet plush expression, the sheer care and quality here are palpable. Sangiovese puts forwards darker fruit than usual, but retains the grape's native poise and medium body, with huge satisfaction in the aromatic brightness and layering. Loaded with both the indescribable complexity and effusive charm that Felsina are so famous for. Decant soon or cellar.

Its Origins

The estate vineyards straddle the Chianti Classico and Chianti Colli Senesi region, and are quite close to the town of Siena. There are 61 hectares of vines in all, but the property is much bigger, totalling 475 hectares, and including olive trees, wheat fields and forests. The name Felsina dates back to the Etruscan people, and back to 2000 BC. Many words in Italy beginning with ‘Fel’ or ‘Bol’ have Etruscan roots. The modern era of Fèlsina began in 1966 when current owner Giuseppe Mazzocolin’s father-in-law acquired the property. They began with 9 hectares of vines, but grew this by massale selection to its current size, and acquired a second property: Castello di Farnetella, in the Colli Senesi.

What The Critics Say

92-95/100 Vinous, Antonio Galloni

"Another impressive 2015, the Fontalloro is a wine of breadth, power and persistence. Today, the oak is still not fully integrated, but there is more than enough depth and resonance in the fruit to make me think that will happen. I can't wait to taste the 2015 from bottle." Drink 2019 - 2033

96/100 Parker's Wine Advocate, Monica Larner

"Gorgeous and soft, the 2013 Fontalloro is another landmark wine from this classic vintage. There is enormous intensity here and the wine is only at the beginning of its long aging trajectory. I suggest you put off drinking it for five to ten more years. There is evident thickness and generosity here, especially in the way those bold fruit favors are woven between dark spice and leather. There are sour accents on the close that remind you of the wine's youth. The tannins are fine and well integrated."
