A beautiful Reserva Sangiovese from the Classico territory of Tuscany. Compelling stuff, the complexity and depth in this wine are something to behold. From the southern tip of Classico, where the wines are very akin to the highly refined Brunellos of nearby Montalcino, this packs red cherry and tamarillo fruits with gentle savoury and mineral power. Structured and utterly complete, it is a must for the decanter or cellar.

Its Origins

The estate vineyards straddle the Chianti Classico and Chianti Colli Senesi region, and are quite close to the town of Siena. There are 61 hectares of vines in all, but the property is much bigger, totalling 475 hectares, and including olive trees, wheat fields and forests. The name Felsina dates back to the Etruscan people, and back to 2000 BC. Many words in Italy beginning with ‘Fel’ or ‘Bol’ have Etruscan roots. The modern era of Fèlsina began in 1966 when current owner Giuseppe Mazzocolin’s father-in-law acquired the property. They began with 9 hectares of vines, but grew this by massale selection to its current size, and acquired a second property: Castello di Farnetella, in the Colli Senesi.

What The Critics Say

93/100 Parker's Wine Advocate, Monica Larner

"The 2015 Chianti Classico Riserva Berardenga is a wine of increased depth and power. The bouquet is redolent of dark fruit, dried cherry, grilled herbs and moist clay that has been wetted by rain drops. The wine shows power and determination on the close that gives it momentum and persistence. This wine shows good possibility for further evolution in the bottle over the next five years or more." Drink 2018 - 2028

92+/100 Vinous, Antonio Galloni

"The 2015 Chianti Classico Riserva is just beginning to show the first signs of opening in its bouquet, but it is much less giving on the palate. Readers should plan on cellaring it for at least another few years. The 2015 is a terrific example of the wild, feral Chianti Classicos that are typical of Castelnuovo Berardenga and Fèlsina." Drink 2020 - 2035

90/100 Wine Enthusiast

"Aromas of dark culinary spice, mature berry and a whiff of new leather emerge in the glass. The tightly wound, tense palate offers wild cherry, licorice and clove framed in taut, fine-grained tannins. Give this another year or two at least to fully develop." Drink 2019 - 2025
