Farnetella is a single vineyard owned by Felsina. The Felsina estate vineyards straddle the Chianti Classico and Chianti Colli Senesi region, and are quite close to the town of Siena. There are 61 hectares of vines in all, but the property is much bigger, totalling 475 hectares, and including olive trees, wheat fields and forests. The name Felsina dates back to the Etruscan people, and back to 2000 BC. Many words in Italy beginning with ‘Fel’ or ‘Bol’ have Etruscan roots. The modern era of Fèlsina began in 1966 when current owner Giuseppe Mazzocolin’s father-in-law acquired the property. They began with 9 hectares of vines, but grew this by massale selection to its current size, and acquired a second property: Castello di Farnetella, in the Colli Senesi (across the road from their winery).
What The Critics Say
Parker's Wine Advocate, Monica Larner
"The 2015 Chianti Colli Senesi opens to tonic freshness with wild berry, raspberry and cassis as the aromatic protagonists. Vineyards are located up to 550 meters above sea level and these high altitudes have contributed to the wine's freshness and crispness. A tiny percentage of Merlot is added to the blend and this grape adds a bit more softness and fullness to the mouthfeel."
92/100 James Suckling (2013 vintage)
"So much fruit and richness for this appellation. Medium to full body, round and velvety tannins and a dried fruit, spice and light oak aftertaste. Drink now. Extremely well done."
Vinous, Ian D'Agata (2013 vintage)
"The 2013 Chianti Colli Senesi is a pleasant, rustic wine to drink over the next handful of years. Smoke, tobacco, grilled herbs, game and black cherries are some of the signatures. The 2013 offers lovely depth from a touch of Merlot that is added to the blend, but at the end of the day the wilder, gamier side of Sangiovese is very much front and center."
