Domaine Faiveley is one of the biggest domaines (115ha) in Burgundy and, many would argue, one of the best. This illustrious company has been based in Nuits St Georges since the days of Pierre Faiveley who founded the business in 1825. His son Joseph gave his name to the family business, to be followed by the first François, Georges who was instrumental in founding the Chevaliers du Tastevin, Guy who developed the business in the Côte Chalonnaise, François who has recently retired and now his son Erwan, born in 1979. The change of generation, enhanced by the arrival of Bernard Hervet as Managing Director, is clear warning of the intention to dynamise the business. Already there has been a notable expansion of vineyards under Faiveley’s control. Many of Faiveley's top wines are hand bottled with no filtration. This in turn results in clean, opulent wines that often show Pinot Noir at its best. Their concentration and richness are rarely equalled.
What The Critics Say
93-96/100 Vinous, Stephen Tanzer
"(entirely destemmed): Bright dark red. Restrained but very pure aromas of raspberry, smoky minerals and game. Viscous, round and generous in the mouth but with terrific fruit intensity and balancing energy; this rather full-bodied wine is ultimately more primary than the Latricières. A wonderfully concentrated wine with outstanding spicy depth and palate-staining perfume. The blend now includes vines in Mazis-Chambertin du Bas, which came to Faiveley with their purchase of Domaine Dupont-Tisserandot in late 2013. While this parcel is not the best location in this grand cru (and the vineyard is missing a lot of vines), the plant material here is excellent, and this fruit improved the wine, according to Erwan Faiveley. The crop level in Mazis was just 20 hectoliters per hectare in 2015."
93-95/100 Parker's Wine Advocate, Neal Martin
"A more deeply pitched nose is composed by notes of dark berry fruit, spice, earth and a hint of animale. There is obvious minerality to the rich, full and naturally sweet broad-scaled yet relatively elegant flavors that are solidly structured, muscular and wonderfully intense while delivering superb complexity on the hugely long and moderately rustic finish. This gorgeous effort is indisputably built for long-term aging." Drink 2033+
