An amazing opportunity - these vines are more than 120 years old (incredible!) and thanks to a special location they are on original rootstock (i.e. not grafted to protect against the Phylloxera louse). This is very rare, and experts argue that when the plant has its original integrity the full depth and nuance of fruit and mineral expression can come through. It's true this wine is forming a reputation of peculiar pedigree and X factor: it doesn't shout but speaks with a captivating depth that seems to communicate something more than just a damned classy, age-worthy, super-serious Barbera. But that's open for debate, and there's only one way to find out what you think.

Its Origins

After working with Marcarini in La Morra, Elvio Cogno returned to his family village in 1990 to rebuild an historical farm into the home of one of Piedmont's more important Barolo producers. Now daughter Nadia and her husband Valter Fissore are the force behind the rising fortunes of the house, producing strictly classic wines with modern cleanliness and technique, low yields and sustainable, closely managed vineyards.

What The Critics Say

93/100 Vinous, Antonio Galloni (2013 vintage)

"The 2013 Barbera d'Alba Prephylloxera opens with gorgeous, enticing scents of smoke, tobacco, crushed flowers, underbrush and blackberry. Deep, intense and vertical in its sense of structure, the 2013 exudes richness and raw power. Readers should plan on giving the 2013 at least another year in bottle. This is a fabulous example of traditionally made, cask-aged Barbera at its best. Sadly, there is just one cask in the cellar to go around." Drink 2016 - 2021

91-93/100 Parker's Wine Advoate, Antonio Galloni (2010 vintage)

"The 2010 Barbera d’Alba Prefilossera is one of the most fascinating wines I tasted this year. A deep, richly colored wine, the Barbera d’Alba Prefilossera boasts huge fruit, expressive aromatics and tons of structure. Menthol, pine, spices, leather, exotic spices and plums stain the palate as this rich Barbera shows off its considerable pedigree. Sadly, there is just one cask to go around. This is shaping up to be a magical wine from Elvio Cogno. Anticipated maturity: 2015-2030."

17/20 JancisRobinson.com (2012 vintage)

"Mid crimson. Smoky (a touch reductive?) dark fruit. Relatively closed on the nose. This has restraint but also oozes class and refinement. You could overlook this because of its restraint but it is really delicious. Juicy, scented, elegant. (JH)."
