An impressive Reserve Syrah from a great producer in Hawkes Bay. Hand plunged and aged for 19 months in 25% new oak along with 1% Viognier co-fermented into the blend, the wine is finely packed with dark fruit and savoury licorice and spice flavours. It has a lovely finish and very fine grained tannins -- a serious Syrah that will decant beautifully or improve further in cellar.

Its Origins

Reydan and Roger Weiss first fell in love with the beauty of Te Awanga when visiting from Germany in 2001. Together they envisaged owning a state-of-the-art winery, merging the traditional values of wine making with an innovative approach and contemporary style to produce exceptional wines to savour and enjoy. With the majestic elephant as their namesake and nestled against a backdrop of rolling hillsides, Elephant Hill spans over 25 hectares of vineyards producing classical, aromatics whites and world-class reds, helmed by winemaker Steve Skinner.

What The Critics Say

96/100 Bob Campbell MW

"Deep, inky syrah with dark berry, liquorice, black pepper, violet, floral and smoky oak flavours. A powerful and slightly closed wine with serious cellaring potential. Firmly structured with bold, ripe tannins. An exciting red. 6/9/2016." Drink 2016 - 2026

96/100 Wine Orbit, Sam Kim

"This is staggeringly delicious and appealing. The lavishly expressed bouquet shows black/blueberry, dark plum, vanilla, toasted hazelnut and fragrant spice aromas, followed by a powerfully expressed palate that is plump, dense and silky. A marvellous syrah offering richness as well as structure and balance. www.elephanthill.co.nz. Feb 2018." Drink 2018 - 2028

5 Stars Michael Cooper

"The classy, youthful 2015 vintage (5*) was hand-picked in the Bridge Pa Triangle (56 per cent), at Te Awanga (30 per cent) and in the Gimblett Gravels (14 per cent), and matured in French oak casks (25 per cent new). Still a baby, it is deeply coloured, fragrant, rich and supple, with a lovely surge of ripe plum, blackcurrant and spice flavours, hints of liquorice and nuts, and a velvety texture. Showing obvious cellaring potential, it should break into full stride 2020+."
