Its Origins

Reydan and Roger Weiss first fell in love with the beauty of Te Awanga when visiting from Germany in 2001. Together they envisaged owning a state-of-the-art winery, merging the traditional values of wine making with an innovative approach and contemporary style to produce exceptional wines to savour and enjoy. With the majestic elephant as their namesake and nestled against a backdrop of rolling hillsides, Elephant Hill spans over 25 hectares of vineyards producing classical, aromatics whites and world-class reds, helmed by winemaker Steve Skinner.

"Bright, light straw-yellow colour, a little lighter on the rim. The nose is firmly concentrated with intense and powerful aromas of white and yellow stonefruits melded with mealy complexities and nutty oak, along with layers of flinty lees elements. Medium-full bodied, the palate features intense and concentrated flavours of ripe white and yellow stonefruits entwined with complexing mealy notes, unfolding layers of nutty oak and flinty lees reduction. The palate has body, power and drive, and flows along a very fine-textured, near seamless line with underlying acid tension and energy. The wine carries to a long, elegantly concentrated finish of stonefruits, nuts, flint and toasty oak. Match with grilled and roasted poultry, pork and veal dishes over the next 5 years. Clone 15 and 95 fruit from the Te Awanga vineyard, hand-picked and indigenous yeast fermented to 13.5% alc., the wine aged 12 months in 30% new French oak with batonnage and 20% MLF.
