Its Origins

Reydan and Roger Weiss first fell in love with the beauty of Te Awanga when visiting from Germany in 2001. Together they envisaged owning a state-of-the-art winery, merging the traditional values of wine making with an innovative approach and contemporary style to produce exceptional wines to savour and enjoy. With the majestic elephant as their namesake and nestled against a backdrop of rolling hillsides, Elephant Hill spans over 25 hectares of vineyards producing classical, aromatics whites and world-class reds, helmed by winemaker Steve Skinner.

"Full, very dark, black-red colour, a little lighter on the rim. The nose is softly full and gently concentrated with aromas of dark-red and black plums along with subtle notes of redcurrants and blackcurrants, along with an amalgam of earth and spices, Medium-full bodied, the palate has rich and succulent flavours of dark-red and black plums entwined with notes of curranty fruit, herbs and earth, unfolding liquorice and spice elements. The fruit sweetness is balanced by finem grainy tannin structure, with good underlying acidity providing drive and line. The wine carries positively to a sustained finish of black plums with growing grip. This is a rich dark-red and black plum fruited red blend with grainy tannin structure and linearity. Match with barbecued and roasted red meats over the next 5-6+ years. "The 2015 vintage (4*) is a deeply coloured, Merlot-based red (70 per cent), with minor portions of Cabernet Sauvignon, Syrah, Malbec and Cabernet Franc. Hand-picked in the Gimblett Gravels, at Te Awanga and in the Bridge Pa Triangle, it was oak-aged for a year. Fragrant and fresh, with generous, ripe blackcurrant, plum and spice flavours, tinged with sweet oak, it has a solid foundation of tannin, and nutty, savoury notes adding complexity. Enjoyable young, it's also well worth cellaring."
