A superb Bordeaux Blend from Hawkes Bay's Elephant Hill. From another great vintage, this wine is packed with the luscious black fruit and fine, deep structure of the Elephant Hill style. But it is distinguished by a good dollop of the Malbec grape, which gives a bright and slight purple-ness to the rich and savoury fruit. Strident yet structured, this is magnificent stuff for the price.

Merlot and Malbec

Its Origins

Reydan and Roger Weiss first fell in love with the beauty of Te Awanga when visiting from Germany in 2001. Together they envisaged owning a state-of-the-art winery, merging the traditional values of wine making with an innovative approach and contemporary style to produce exceptional wines to savour and enjoy. With the majestic elephant as their namesake and nestled against a backdrop of rolling hillsides, Elephant Hill spans over 25 hectares of vineyards producing classical, aromatics whites and world-class reds, helmed by winemaker Steve Skinner.

What The Critics Say

95/100 Wine Orbit, Sam Kim

"A magnificent Bordeaux-style, the gloriously expressed bouquet shows complex aromas of cassis, mixed berry compote, cedar, cocoa and subtle cigar box notes. The palate is superbly concentrated and impressively weighted, wonderfully enhanced by fleshy mouthfeel and silky tannins. Splendidly composed and styled, destined to evolve gracefully. www.elephanthill.co.nz. Feb 2018." Drink 2018 - 2028

94/100 Bob Campbell MW

"Dense, almost chewy red with intense, ripe berry and plum flavours supported by spick oak. An appealing wine that can be appreciated now but is a good prospect for at least moderate cellaring."

5 Stars Michael Cooper

"Already delicious, the 2015 vintage (5*) is a blend of Merlot (72 per cent), Malbec (20 per cent) and Cabernet Sauvignon (8 per cent). Hand-harvested in the company's vineyards in the Gimblett Gravels and Bridge Pa Triangle, it was matured for two years in French oak casks (42 per cent new). Deep and youthful in colour, it has a fresh, fragrant bouquet. The palate is full-bodied, sweet-fruited and lush, with concentrated blackcurrant and spice flavours, hints of dark chocolate and nuts, fine-grained tannins and a long, smooth-flowing finish. Highly enjoyable now, but well worth cellaring, it should break into full stride 2020+."
