Reydan and Roger Weiss first fell in love with the beauty of Te Awanga when visiting from Germany in 2001. Together they envisaged owning a state-of-the-art winery, merging the traditional values of wine making with an innovative approach and contemporary style to produce exceptional wines to savour and enjoy. With the majestic elephant as their namesake and nestled against a backdrop of rolling hillsides, Elephant Hill spans over 25 hectares of vineyards producing classical, aromatics whites and world-class reds, helmed by winemaker Steve Skinner.
What The Critics Say
94/100 Wine Orbit, Sam Kim
"This is superbly ripe and beautifully composed, displaying fabulous aromas of cassis, dark plum, blueberry, vanilla and toasted hazelnut on the nose. The palate is concentrated and dense, and offers terrific fruit purity and intensity, wonderfully enhanced by velvety texture and fine, chalky tannins. At its best: now to 2021. $34.00. www.elephanthill.co.nz. Aug 2017." Drink 2017 - 2021
4.5 Stars Michael Cooper
" The 2015 vintage (4.5*) has deep, youthful colour. Full-bodied, it's a generous red with concentrated, ripe plum, red berry and spice flavours, gently seasoned with oak, hints of dark chocolate and licorice, and excellent harmony and potential." Drink 2017 - 2025
18+/20 Raymond Chan
"Full, deep, near impenetrable black-hued purple-red colour, youthful in appearance. The nose is elegantly concentrated with deep and well-packed aromas of ripe dark-red and black-berried fruits along with black plums and spicy elements, lifted by florals, unfolding dark herbs and black minerals. Medium-full bodied, the palate possesses rich fruit flavours of black and dark-red berry fruits entwined with spicy plums and dark herbs, and savoury earthy and mineral detail. The fruit sweetness is balanced by fine, grainy tannin extraction providing structure and grip. The mouthfeel features fresh, lacy acidity lending freshness and energy, and the wine carries to an elegantly concentrated finish. Match with lamb, beef, venison and game meat over the next 6-8 years. A blend of 74% Merlot and 24% Malbec from the ‘Gimblett Gravel’ vineyard with 2% Tempranillo from the ‘Triangle’ site, fermented to 13.5% alc., the wine aged 20 months in 38% new French oak barrels. 575 dozen made. 18.0+/20 Aug 2017 RRP $34.00"
