Situated on Germany’s Mosel River among some of the world’s most treasured vineyards, the Dr. Loosen estate has been in the same family for more than 200 years. When Ernst Loosen (pronounced LOH-zen) assumed ownership in 1988, he realized that, with ungrafted vines averaging 60 years old in some of Germany’s top-rated vineyards, he had the raw materials to create stunningly intense, world-class Rieslings. To achieve this, Ernst immediately changed the estate’s vineyard practices to dramatically reduce crop size. He stopped all chemical fertilization, preferring only moderate use of organic fertilizers and soil amendments. He extended his commitment to sustainable practices beyond the vineyards and into the winery, implementing improvements in materials recycling, energy efficiency and water conservation. At harvest, he insisted on fully mature fruit that had been very strictly selected. And he turned to gentler cellar practices that would allow the wine to develop its full potential with a minimum of technological meddling.
What The Critics Say
94/100 Parker's wine Advocate, Stephan Reinhardt (2013 vintage)
"The 2013 Ürziger Würzgarten Riesling Auslese again is purer and more precise, piquant and flinty on the nose than the gold-capsuled Spätlese, which makes the Auslese a better terroir ambassador than the luxury Spätlese. Compared with the regular Spätlese the Auslese is even more refined and sophisticated and, of course, more concentrated and sweet or, to shorten the eulogy, a terrific, piquant and terroir-driven Würzgarten: grand cru à la Moselle!" Drink 2015 - 2050
90/100 Vinous, Joel B Payne (2013 vintage)
"Pale golden yellow. Rich aromas of yellow plum, musk and sweet herbs, along with a faint hint of brown spice botrytis. Boasts good depth to its rich tropical fruit flavors but is more noteworthy for its velvety texture and elegant style. Finishes with salty minerality and very good persistence." Drink 2017 - 2027
92/100 Wine Enthusiast (2012 vintage)
"Flavors of honey tangerines and quince preserves resonate deeply in this sweet-tangy Riesling full of fruit and blossom flavors. So sprightly and brisk, it dances delicately on the tongue, yet lingers long with a murmur of lime zest astringency."
