Top wine from a producer Robert Parker called "Superstar of Rasteau." Deep extraction adds power to already lush Rasteau fruit, with most aging in large format for purity of flavour, the Syrah aging in old barriques to bring extra texture. Intensely bright, resonant and age-worthy, this is a true treasure of this great Rhone terroir.

Its Origins

Domaine La Soumade was founded by André Roméro in 1979. By 1990, this passionate winegrower had achieved his long-cherished ambition of selling his entire production in bottle. And in 1996, André was joined by his son Frédéric, after he had obtained his BEPA Diploma in viticulture and oenology. A new modern winery was built in 2002, the same year that a partnership with consultant Stéphane Derenoncourt and his team began. Stéphane encouraged gentler and more finely-tuned vinification techniques, so as to better reflect the unique expression and potential of the terroir. Without doubt, the wines have achieved greater finesse and purity. As of today, the estate covers 26 hectares in the commune of Rasteau and an additional hectare in Gigondas - a small terraced vineyard near the Dentelles de Montmirail. The clay - limestone soils of Rasteau produce naturally powerful wines with great ageing potential.

What The Critics Say

94/100 Parker's Wine Advocate, Joe Czerwinski

"The most impressive wine in the stable, the 2015 Rasteau Cuvee Fleur de Confiance displays some exotic spice notes (cumin?), red raspberry fruit and a rich, velvety texture. It's a star in the making that could use another year or two in the bottle to fully knit together. It's effectively all Grenache grown on blue-clay soils, which perform well during hot, dry years. -- It was the end of a long day by the time I arrived at Andre Romero's Domaine La Soumade in Rasteau. Despite the late hour, the patriarch himself was there to greet me, along with his son, Frédéric. It had been close to ten years since my previous visit, and I'm pleased to report that the wines have grown more refined and elegant over that time." Drink 2019 - 2030

Simon field MW (2012 vintage)

"The top wine is really singing in 2012. A blend of 90% Grenache and 10% Syrah, the former aged in oval vats, the latter in second-fill barrique, this is immediately engaging, with its nose of Scottish heather and tapenade, and a palate which is concentrated and yet relatively light on its feet, its alcohol level, although by no means immodest, still a little lower than sometimes."
