A ripe and savoury Gigondas, this wine is beautifully traditional. Lush Rhone fruit coats the fine tannins, with mineral and savoury themes at the wine's core. Despite being from a very ripe year in a village so hot it produces reds as rich as expensive Chateauneuf, this is relatively elegant, with a focus on structure and drive. Serious food wine from a top producer.

Its Origins

Domaine La Soumade was founded by André Roméro in 1979. By 1990, this passionate winegrower had achieved his long-cherished ambition of selling his entire production in bottle. And in 1996, André was joined by his son Frédéric, after he had obtained his BEPA Diploma in viticulture and oenology. A new modern winery was built in 2002, the same year that a partnership with consultant Stéphane Derenoncourt and his team began. Stéphane encouraged gentler and more finely-tuned vinification techniques, so as to better reflect the unique expression and potential of the terroir. Without doubt, the wines have achieved greater finesse and purity. As of today, the estate covers 26 hectares in the commune of Rasteau and an additional hectare in Gigondas - a small terraced vineyard near the Dentelles de Montmirail. The clay - limestone soils of Rasteau produce naturally powerful wines with great ageing potential. “The superstar of Rasteau is Andre Romero, who produces five cuvees of drop-dead delicious red wine.” Robert Parker

What The Critics Say

88-90/100 Vinous, Josh Raynolds

"The 2015 Gigondas has outstanding potential and is medium to full-bodied, with firm tannin, ample dark fruits and obvious minerality. Based on 70% Grenache and 30% Syrah, it has a lovely elegance to it, and I suspect it will keep for at least a decade. -- One of the greats of Rasteau is unquestionably Domaine la Soumade, which is managed by the father/son team of Andre and Frédéric Roméro. The estate covers 26 hectares (they have a small parcel in Gigondas) and fashions four cuvées from Rasteau, as well as a traditional Gigondas and two Côtes du Rhônes. They receive consulting advice from well-known Bordeaux consultant, Stéphane Derenoncourt. While I wasn’t able to taste the full range of 2015s (the Prestige cuvee showed beautifully), the 2014s from this estate are at the top of the vintage. If you get the chance, don’t miss them."

93/100 Wine Advocate

"Tasted on two occasions (once blind), the 2015 Gigondas, from a vineyard situated at 400 meters above sea level, is a terrific wine. The red fruit on the nose brings to mind tart cherries and pomegranates. The medium-bodied wine is supple and creamy on the palate, with building notions of fruit and spice on the long, plush finish. Bravo!"
