40% Roussanne with 30% each of Grenache Blanc and Clairette
Domaine de la Janasse was established in 1973 by Aimé Sabon. Brother and sister team of Christophe and Isabelle Sabon continue to work wonders at Janasse, and farm 80 hectares of vineyards spread over a number of wine appellations: Châteauneuf du Pâpe, which is all located in the north-east of the appellation in the commune of Courthézon to be precise, Côtes du Rhône, Côtes du Rhône Village, but also Vin de Pays de la Principauté d'Orange and Vin de table. Concrete tanks are used for the Grenache and oak for the Syrah and Mourvèdre; in other words, everything is fairly traditional; it is the quality of the raw materials which is so impressive and for that reason alone, leaving aside the clear skill and vision of the Sabons, that we are delighted to take on these excellent wines in our listings.
What The Critics Say
93/100 Parker's Wine Advocate, Jeb Dunnuck
"The base 2015 Châteauneuf du Pape Blanc is another killer effort. Made from 40% Roussanne and 30% each of Grenache Blanc and Clairette, it offers copious amounts of sautéed peach, tangerine and orange blossom to go with beautiful fruit and texture on the palate. Possessing vibrant acidity and a clean, crisp finish, I’d drink it over the coming 3-4 years, but you can keep this cuvée for decades. One of the finest run estates in all of Châteauneuf du Pape is Domaine de la Janasse, which is managed today by the brother and sister pair of Christophe and Isabelle Sabon. Looking at the 2014 and 2015 releases, both lean towards the more finesse-driven end of the spectrum, with Pinot Noir-like textures and less overt concentration than past vintages. That’s certainly expected in a vintage like 2014, but is surprising in a vintage like 2015. While the estate’s reds, both Châteauneuf du Papes and Côtes du Rhône, are well known, don’t make the mistake of missing their whites, as these are some of the most impressive and age-worthy wines in just about every vintage. It’s also worth noting the new Isabelle Sabon Clos St Antonin releases, also reviewed in this report. This is a new estate located just beside the Plan de Dieu and they release four cuvées: one white and three reds."
92/100 Galloni's Vinous, Josh Raynolds
"Light bright yellow. Fresh, mineral-laced orchard and pit fruit and floral aromas show excellent clarity, and honey and vanilla elements add complexity. Silky, concentrated and sharply focused on the palate, featuring emphatic mineral lift to the concentrated pear and peach nectar and nougat flavors. A toasty lees note comes up slowly with air and carries through the very long, incisive finish, which leaves behind mineral and pear skin notes. The interplay of richness and vivacity that this wine displays is quite impressive."
