Its Origins
Dog Point Vineyard combines the considerable winegrowing experience of Ivan Sutherland and James Healy, the former chief viticulturalist and head winemaker at Cloudy Bay. After leaving Cloudy Bay, Ivan and James began making wines from Sutherland's own vineyards, which were planted in the 70's and 80's. Additional fruit is sourced from selected vineyard plantings dating back to the late 1970's. The first vintage with the Dog Point label was 2004, using 2002 fruit. Over 200 hectares of vines are farmed, with sustainable/organic practices.
What The Critics Say
94/100 Tim Atkin
"A wine that's consistently a match for all but the very best (and much more expensive) wines of Pessac-Léognan, this deftly oaked Marlborough Sauvignon ages brilliantly too. Leesy, rich yet beautifully balanced, it combines flavours of vanilla spice, gooseberry fool, lanolin and vivid acidity. One of the region's very best expressions of the grape."
5 Stars Raymond Chan (2014 vintage)
"Brilliant, light golden-yellow colour with lemon-green hues, paler on the rim. The nose is tightly bound and softly concentrated with intense and penetrating aromas of white and green stonefruits melded with subtle herbal notes and a layering of complex, flinty, mineral and wet-stone elements. Dry to taste and medium-bodied, the palate is finely proportioned with a harmoniously entwined core of white and green stonefruits, soft herbs and subtle mineral and flinty detail. The mouthfeel is fresh and lively, the fruit underlined by refreshing acidity, and the wine flows along a very fine-textured line. This has energy and tension, providing the palate with drive, leading to a dry, tine-textured finish of herbs and flint. This is an elegantly concentrated, fine-textured, oak-influenced Sauvignon Blanc with stonefruit flavours and complexing flinty detail. Match with herb-marinated poultry and pork dishes over the next 4 years. Fruit from a single block on the ‘Dog Point’ vineyard, hand-picked, WBP and fully barrel-fermented with solids by indigenous yeasts to 14.0% alc. and 1.25 g/L RS, the wine aged 18 months in seasoned French oak, the wine undergoing occasional batonnage and no MLF. 18.5+/20 Apr 2016 RRP $35.00."
