The story of Doctor's Flat Vineyard begins in the late 1980s, in France and California, where Steve Davies first encountered great practitioners of old world winemaking, and the best of new world innovators. By 1999 Steve had settled in Central Otago, making Pinot for Akarua and on the hunt for his own land. He was looking for something in particular—a site that would offer all the conditions he had come to believe were essential for great Pinot. It was a long and thorough search, and in 2002 he found it, an elevated site on deep glacial gravels in Bannockburn. After then making wine for Carrick and supplying grapes to Valli, Steve's Doctor's Flat label is establishing a stellar reputation in New Zealand and overseas for sheer quality and command of both style and terroir.
What The Critics Say
95/100 Bob Campbell MW
"From an organically farmed three hectre vineyard in a Bannockburn site thats cooler than most in that subregion. Delicately scented pinot noir with floral, red rose, dark cherry, plum, spice and thyme flavours. Supple and appealing wine with an ethereal texture. It’s deliciously drinkable now but should age gracefully. A classy pinot noir. "
5 Stars Michael Cooper
"This lovely, single-vineyard red was grown at Bannockburn. Refined and harmonious, it is fragrant, mouthfilling (13.5% alc/vol) and savoury wine with sweet fruit, concentrated cherry, plum and spice fl avours, showing
real complexity, and a finely textured, lasting finish. Fully a match for many, far-higher priced Central Otago reds. It’s already drinking well.
