A Magnum of superb Pinot Noir from Bannockburn. Steve Davies made wine for Carrick and Akarua before developing his own vineyard, from which some of the fruit also goes to Pinot specialist Valli for their famous Bannockburn label. In other words, this wine has pedigree written all over it. The result itself is subtly powerful and refined, with brooding dark fruit in a fine, supple core of freshness, depth and mineral layering. Assured and sophisticated, Doctor's Flat is a step above every other Central Pinot at the price.

Pinot Noir

Its Origins

The story of Doctor's Flat Vineyard begins in the late 1980s, in France and California, where Steve Davies first encountered great practitioners of old world winemaking, and the best of new world innovators. By 1999 Steve had settled in Central Otago, making Pinot for Akarua and on the hunt for his own land. He was looking for something in particular—a site that would offer all the conditions he had come to believe were essential for great Pinot. It was a long and thorough search, and in 2002 he found it, an elevated site on deep glacial gravels in Bannockburn. After then making wine for Carrick and supplying grapes to Valli, Steve's Doctor's Flat label is establishing a stellar reputation in New Zealand and overseas for sheer quality and command of both style and terroir.

What The Critics Say

95/100 Bob Campbell MW

"Delicately scented pinot noir with floral, red rose, dark cherry, plum, spice and thyme flavours. Supple and appealing wine with an ethereal texture. It's deliciously drinkable now but should age gracefully. A classy pinot noir 21 MAY 2018" Drink 2018 - 2023

95/100 Wine Orbit, Sam Kim

"Exquisitely composed and styled, the engaging bouquet shows dark cherry, thyme, black olive and truffle characters with nuances of game and toasted almonds. The palate is concentrated and multi-layered, delivering gorgeous fruit purity combined with seductive savoury notes and sensual mouthfeel. From their single vineyard in the Bannockburn district, this is superbly long and gratifying on the finish. $49.50. www.doctorsflat.co.nz. May 2018." Drink 2018 - 2025

5 Stars Michael Cooper

"The lovely 2015 vintage (5*) is a single-vineyard red, grown at Bannockburn, matured for a year in French oak barrels (23 per cent new), and bottled without fining or filtering. Notably refined and harmonious, it is fragrant, mouthfilling and savoury, with sweet-fruit delights, concentrated cherry, plum and spice flavours, showing real complexity, and a finely textured, lasting finish. Fully a match for many, far higher-priced Central Otago reds, it's already drinking well, but should be long-lived." Drink 2020+
