Merlot, Cab Sauvignon, Cab Franc
Craggy Range began with the desire to create a legacy. When Terry Peabody visited New Zealand in 1997 he was introduced to Steve Smith, MW. Terry sensed an exciting possibility in New Zealand; the exceptional climate and spirit of the people aligned with his own philosophy and desire to cut a new path. He wanted to create wines that would become internationally regarded as New World classics. The two men made an important decision from the beginning - to select and source the best land in the country, and to plant the vines perfectly suited to that soil and climate. The winery - one of the most technically advanced ever built in New Zealand - is known for uncompromising standards and meticulous craftsmanship.
What The Critics Say
93/100 Sam Kim ( 2014 vintage )
"Over the years, this label has attracted many fans, and that fan base is sure to grow with this delectable offering. Aromas of dark plum, blueberry, mixed spice and cedar with a hint of dried herb lead to a beautifully weighted palate that is silky, rounded and lingering. The wine shows pristine fruit flavours with stylish oak infusion, backed by plenty of fine tannins. A blend of 68% Merlot, 18% cabernet sauvignon, 8% malbec and 6% cabernet franc. At its best: now to 2022. $28.00. www.craggyrange.com. March 2016."
18.5/20 Raymond Chan ( 2014 vintage )
"Dark, deep, near impenetrable, purple-hued black-red colour with youthful purple hues on the rim. The nose is fresh with deeply packed and harmoniously interwoven aromas of ripe black and dark-red plums, blackcurrants, cassis liqueur, and soft nuances of dark herbs, tobacco and spice elements. Medium-bodied, the palate features plush and juicy, ripe flavours of dark-red plums and cassis melded seamlessly with herbs and tobacco to form a softly concentrated core. The mouthfeel is bright and energetic from lacy acidity and the palate is balanced by supple tannin extraction and structure. The flavours carry to a softly concentrated, lingering finish of black plums, currants and tobacco. A blend of 68% Merlot, 18% Cabernet Sauvignon, 8% Malbec and 6% Cabernet Franc fermented to 13.2% alc., the wine aged 17 months in 28% new French oak barriques. Match with roast lamb and beef over the next 5-6+ years. 18.5-/20 Mar 2016 RRP $27.95."
