Founded in 1980 by Andrew and Cynthia Hendry when the New Zealand wine industry was small and relatively unknown, Coopers Creek Vineyard has grown and matured over three decades into a top class winery with a strong international presence. It continues to innovate, particularly with new wine styles, introducing and pioneering promising new grape varieties that are ideal for cool climate regions. Viognier, Albariño, Arneis, Grüner Veltliner, Marsanne and Montepulciano are new varieties for New Zealand, but heading for stardom. Coopers Creek is satisfying a growing demand for these stylish varieties in addition to its longstanding pedigree with Chardonnay, Syrah and Bordeaux reds.
What The Critics Say
94/100 Bob Campbell MW
"Great value Hawkes Bay syrah with vibrant red berry, violet, black pepper and spicy oak flavours. Appealing and accessible wine with an elegant rather than blockbuster style. Normally co-fermented with a small amount of viognier, but was 100% syrah in 2015.$27."
18.5/20 Raymond Chan
"Very dark, deep, purple hued ruby-red, a little lighter on the rim, youthful in appearance. The nose is taut and tightly bound with intense aromas of ripe blackberries and dark raspberries, along with plums and violet florals, and nuances of spice, hints of jam, and savoury, nutty oak. Medium-bodied, the palate has rich and sweet, vibrant and bright flavours of dark raspberries with blackberry notes, entwined with violet florals, black pepper and spices, unfolding succulent jam nuances and nutty oak. The fruit sweetness is the feature, and is supported by fine-grained tannin extraction and fine underlying acidity. The palate has grip and a long, lingering finish. This is a well-balanced Syrah with sweet and juicy blackberry and raspberry fruit, with pepper, spice, florals and jam notes on a fine-grained, textural palate. Serve with lamb, beef and venison over the next 5-6 years. Syrah fruit from the ‘Chalk Ridge’ block, south of Havelock, and a small amount of Gimblett Gravels fruit, co-fermented with 1.53% Viognier to 13.0% alc., the wine aged 12 months in 50% new French oak. Oct 2017 RRP $28.00." Drink 2017 - 2023

"The classy 2015 vintage (4.5*) is a single-vineyard red, offering fine value. Floral and deeply coloured, it is still youthful, with excellent density of plummy, spicy, peppery, distinctly varietal flavours and a long, finely textured finish. Full-bodied, it's a very ageworthy wine, likely to be at its best 2019+."
